Border CBT - CFT Therapy Spotlight

Border CBT Damian McLaughlinPartners Damian and Irene at Border CBT know the importance of being able to offer a wide range of skills to support their clients.

Damian McLaughlin, qualified pscyhotherapist, has broadened the scope of what approaches Border CBT has to offer, including Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Art Therapy. 

 

Beck Institute Scholarships

The Beck Institute for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is pleased to announce its 3rd Annual Student and Faculty Scholarship Competition.

The Beck Institute will award 10 recipients (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, and faculty in psychology, psychiatry, social work, nursing, and counseling) with full tuition scholarships to our 3-day Student and Faculty Workshop, in Philadelphia, PA, on August 13 – 15, 2012.

This experiential workshop will provide expert training in evidence-based treatment under the direction of Drs. Judith Beck and Aaron Beck, and leaders in the field of cognitive behavior therapy. A special conversation hour with Dr. Aaron Beck is planned.

Mental Health Strategy: have your say!

The Scottish Government are asking for opinions on the new Mental Health Strategy by way of consultation.  Whilst there are many areas which would benefit from your comment, it asks specifically what can be done to reduce psychotherapy treatment waiting lists down to 18 weeks from the time of referral.

 

Binge Drinking can be contagious

Recent research at Dalhousie University has shown that couples can influence each other's drinking habits. Over a 28 day time frame, researchers were able to predict one partner's binge drinking based the other partner's binge drinking.

 

Drug can Erase Bad Memories

A new study by the Centre for Studies on Human Stress, Montreal, has found that the drug metyrapone may affect the brains ability to associate negative emotions with painful memories.

Can you Spot a Bad Man?

According to new studies you can spot a 'bad man' just by looking at his face.  Research into whether people were able to identify a man with criminal tendences (men who had been convicted of assault, rape and murder) showed a significant 'hit rate' of correct identification. (see Journal of Social, Evolutionary and Cultural Psychology)

 

Are we coping better as a Nation?

Rates of depression and anxiety have not increased in recent years, according to new research published in the British Journal of Psychiatry. The research, carried out by the University of Leicester, UCL and King's College London, contradicts anecdotal concerns that mental illness is on the rise.

 

The GCTC opens in Glasgow

It's all go for The Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre this month, as applications open for its January Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. 

The centre, based in Claremont, was founded by therapists and trainers, Hilda Smith and Heather Davies, in response to the growing demand for professional Cognitive Therapy training and treatment in the Greater Glasgow area.

 

£400m for English Mental Health

More focus will be placed on dealing with mental health problems at an early stage under government plans.

The new mental health strategy for England promises an extra £400m for therapies, such as counselling, to increase access to them by 60% by 2015.
