Therapy FAQ

What is a Psychotherapist?

A psychotherapist can help individuals, families or groups to address issues which are affecting them in their everyday lives.

Therapists may use different modalities, but regardless of the approach and the tools used, all have the intention of integrating a positive approach with which individuals can cope more effectively with obstacles or issues they encounter.

I finished Therapy - can I be re-referred?

Things can happen, and situations can change, and it's quite common that someone may wish to  refer themselves again, sometime after completing treatment.  If you have a particular Therapist you wish to see, contact us and we will re-refer you to that Therapist where possible.

It may also be an idea, if agreed between yourself and your Therapist, to keep his/her contact details just in case.

How can I train as a Therapist?

There are many courses available across the Uk which result in certification as a fully qualified Therapist.  Information on courses available can be found in our Training section.

Can I 'top-up' on my therapy sessions?

Yes! Therapy can be a little bit like having a mentor or friend beside you when you most need it.  However, if your issues are enduring, such as endogenous depression, or personality disorder, it may be an idea to go for a 'check up' every few months or so, or as agreed between yourself and your Therapist.

How Long Does Treatment Last?

Different Therapies typically have different treatment durations, but, regardless of what type of therapy you choose, you are in control.  The length of treatment will likely be agreed between you and your Therapist, which is subject to review every few sessions.

What if I can't make my appointment?

You and your Therapist will draw up an agreement at the first session, which states what is important to both of you to ensure a safe and productive working environment.  You may have some personal requests, for example, that a door is left slightly ajar, that allowances be made for medication, etc.  The Therapist will usually include the need for mutual trust, confidentiality and punctuality.

Therapists will often waive their fee if notice is given outwith 24hr - 48hrs that you will be unable to make your appointment.  However, as the Therapist will often be travelling themselves, it is reasonable to expect that a failed appointment without notice will result in a cancellation charge.

It is best to agree all of this at the outset to avoid misunderstanding.

Can I speak to the Therapist first?

Once you have emailed the Therapist, he or she wil call you to discuss your needs and to book an appointment.  At this point, you can ask anything you need to, and decide whether or not you wish to meet for an appointment.  If you do not wish to receive therapy, let the Therapist know.  Therapists understand how important it is to 'connect' with the person you will be sharing your thoughts and feelings with and will not take offence if you decline treatment at this point.

Finished Therapy - what happens to my information?

There are laws protecting confidential information, and this includes everything discussed during your sessions.  Therapists may have different ways of operating, but all have to adhere to the rules and regulations set out in the Data Protection Act (1988)

There is only one situation where a Therapist may be obliged to speak to a third party, and this is in the event that he or she has reason to believe that a client may intend to harm him/herself or someone known to them. This is very rarely actioned, but will normally form part of the agreedment set out in the first session/p>
